The Big Interview: A man for all seasons

For a man who has advanced British engineering and exported it around the world as managing director of the multimillion pound company Findlay Irvine, Colin Irvine (54), seems to be one of the most modest people you will ever meet. The only question that stumps him in our conversation is ‘what is the proudest moment of your career?’

‘I suppose the way we have expanded our railway business over the last few years has been a bit of a turning point for the business. We have always done work within the rail sector but with the introduction of asset condition monitoring equipment several years ago our rail business expanded quite a lot. It’s made a big difference to our company. The rail business has been excellent over the last few years.'

Embankment and cutting monitoring systems have helped Findlay Irvine win work with Network Rail and have a direct market into the road industry as well. Other recent developments at the Edinburgh-based company established in 1960 by James Findlay and John Irvine, Colin’s father, include a flood warning system, which is being installed in various locations around the country including Somerset.
