Thames Barrier ‘meets needs for rest of century’ conference told

The Thames Barrier will be able to provide continued protection to London until the end of the century, the Environment Agency has confirmed.

The EA said it intended to manage flood risk through a series of mainly soft interventions over the century, including creating new inter-tidal habitats in the Thames Estuary and more controlled use of the flood plain.

But four potential locations further downstream have been identified for another barrier, if necessary. Sea level rising is crushing salt marshes ‘out of existence’ around Canvey Island, EA spokespeople said at a specially-organised conference this week.
