Transport for London (TfL) has announced £1M investment to support the growth of car clubs across the capital over the course of the next two years.
According to the organisation, this will bring around one-third of all Londoners to within a five-minute walk of a car club vehicle.
The investment will provide 726 new parking spaces across 19 London boroughs for car club vehicles by 2011. London mayor, Boris Johnson, said: ‘Car clubs are a fantastic way for Londoners to cut their motoring costs and help reduce CO2 in the capital.’
The mayor added that for each car club vehicle on the streets, it was estimated that six privately-owned cars were taken off the road.
Ben Plowden, programme director of smarter travel at TfL, said: ‘While many journeys can be easily completed by public transport, on bike or by foot, there are some journeys which can be difficult to make without a car – which is why car clubs are such a great solution.’
Antonia Roberts, director of national car share charity Carplus, said: ‘Car clubs are thriving in the capital, thanks in no small part to the continued support and investment of Transport for London.
‘Carplus hopes that such support will be echoed across the country to facilitate the development of a national network of car clubs, which will ensure the multiple benefits they offer are accessible to all.’ • The UK’s first motorway lane exclusive to car share vehicles was opened last June. The 1.7-mile lane, which is at the junction of the M606 and M62 motorways, south of Bradford, West Yorkshire, is open to vehicles with two or more occupants.
