TfL hopes for green light

Transport for London is to seek government approval for signals allowing traffic to turn on to side roads during a green pedestrian phase.
TfL believes it is constrained in the way in which it can set up its 5,800 signals to effectively serve competing demands from different road-users and wants permission for innovative new techniques.
These also include establishing ‘flashing amber’ phases, when both pedestrians and vehicles can proceed at night and other quiet times.
