TfL gives green light to £66M traffic signal-modernisation project

Transport for London is to trial Siemen’s extra-low voltage controller as part of the new £66M ‘traffic signals performance and maintenance’ contract.

Siemens is to supply up to 1,200 junction and pelican controllers over three years, as part of TfL’s plan to modernise signals up to 30 years old, where signal capacity is being lost – up to 15 minutes a day at each set.

An extra-low voltage signal – as trialled by Newcastle City Council since August – uses as little as 750 watts, compared with 3,000 watts for a traditional installation. London mayor Boris Johnson has pledged to tackle traffic signal ‘neglect’ (Surveyor, 22 May).
