Testing times for emergency services in tunnel exercise

A full-scale exercise simulating two major accidents at the Dartford Crossing tested the emergency services response last weekend.
The crossing was closed between 1am and 6am on Sunday, 11 June, with around 2,500 drivers diverted to the Blackwall Tunnel.
The exercise, involving emergency services from
Kent and Essex, the Highways Agency and crossing operator Le Crossing, involved simulating a multiple pile-up and a separate road tanker-spill inside the tunnel. Around 100 volunteers, including 30 ‘casualties’, needed to be evacuated.
The Highways Agency has commissioned a report on the lessons learned in a bid to improve emergency responses.
