Telling signs of fatigue mean repairs for historic crossing

Middlesbrough’s historic Transporter Bridge has been closed for repair, following the discovery that 400 bolts which hold down the gondola’s track for its cross-river journey needed replacement, compared with the 50 or so usually revealed by inspections.

These are carried out every three months, and the bridge tracks are getting the usual mid-life overhaul which occurs midway through the 20-year life of the rails.

‘The rails are similar to conventional railways from the early 20th century, with the traditional “clickety clack” as vehicles pass over them,’ says bridgemaster, Alan Murray. ‘When the “clickety clacks” get louder or more frequent, it’s as if it’s the bridge’s way of telling us it needs some attention.’
