London's Southwark council was crowned ‘best local authority’ at the first-ever Living Streets Awards for its hard work in transforming the borough to make it more pedestrian-friendly.
The borough was chosen for its pro-pedestrian and road safety initiatives. In addition to a 20mph scheme being considered locally, it was commended for its Walworth Road project, which involved widening footways, making crossings safer, removing guard railing and improving lighting.
Tony Armstrong, chief executive of Living Streets, said: ‘Walworth Road is a fine example of a scheme which has transformed an area that was once just seen as a traffic corridor, into a people-friendly public space. 'We were impressed that local people, those who use the area regularly, were consulted throughout the project.’
