Tackling Canvey Island jams in a roundabout way

Essex County Council has backed a report outlining how to reduce congestion to unlock the economic potential of Canvey Island.

Projects discussed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday include a Canvey regeneration link road, which could be funded through a toll charge. Currently, all traffic entering or leaving Canvey must pass through the congested Waterside Farm roundabout.

The council will also explore possibilities of a third access road, costing about £70M and linked to the London Gateway development, with Thurrock Council and Dubai Ports World, developers of the nearby Shellhaven deep-water container port which has the potential to create more than 16,000 jobs. The next stage is for the council to identify funding sources for the schemes.

The backing gives the council a firm lobbying platform to bid for cash and ensures the projects are ready to go when potential funding becomes available.

Cllr Norman Hume, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: ‘This is an ambitious package of measures and we will not be able to deliver them all immediately but, as a council, we are committed to relieving congestion on Canvey and making sure the island gets moving again.’
