Sutton’s smart approach to travel scoops MJ accolade

A ground-breaking travel project operated by London Borough of Sutton Council and Transport for London (TfL) won the sustainable transport strategy prize at last week’s MJ Awards.

The project is a £5M, three-year partnership between the council and TfL to reduce car use and promote sustainable travel in the borough.

Cllr Colin Hall, the council’s executive member for environment, said: ‘The MJ Awards celebrate the best of local government across the UK, and this award is really special.

‘It is a tribute to all the residents, schools and businesses who have backed Smarter Travel Sutton and shared our vision to change the way they travel around the borough.’

In the first two years, cycling has increased by 85%, bus use by 13%, and car use has decreased by a 2%. The MJ is Surveyor’s sister magazine.
