Sutton riding high after bike success

Cycling in Sutton has increased by 50% in one year, following the introduction of the Smarter Travel Sutton scheme in the borough.

The three-year, £5M project is funded by Transport for London, and delivered in partnership with the London Borough of Sutton, local businesses and the local community.

The progress report for the second year found that cycle theft had fallen by 17%, thanks to the introduction of around 200 new secure cycle parking spaces across the borough, and proactive targeting of cycle theft hotspots by police.

The report also revealed that bus use had risen by 7.2% in the project’s second year, and by 13% since the start of the programme.
