Surveyors urge ‘rigorous’ property inspection following US collapse

The collapse of the road bridge in Minnesota in the US last week was a ‘wake-up call’ to local authorities across the UK, the CSS has warned.

The incident showed that no authority can afford to ignore the need for a ‘rigorous maintenance and inspection regime’, even though the truss girder construction of the American bridge is rare in the UK.

Richard Fish, chairman of the CSS Bridges Group, said: ‘While a similar type of failure is highly unlikely in the UK, no bridge owner can afford to be complacent and must ensure appropriate management regimes are in place and properly financed.’ The society has asked any members who have similar bridges to get in touch with the Bridges Group, which will be monitoring developments from Minneapolis and learning from issues raised.
