Survey reveals increasing satisfaction with roads

The public’s perception of road maintenance and network satisfaction is increasing, but there are concerns for the future, according to research carried out on behalf of senior county officials.
The findings are part of the seventh consecutive annual survey carried out by Ipsos MORI for the CSS. The survey revealed satisfaction with the road network was up from 46% in 2001 to 55% in 2006, while the road maintenance figures rose from 37% to 51% in the same period.
However, only one-third believes the road network to be in good condition, while one-fifth thinks it is inadequate and almost two-thirds don’t believe the condition of the network will improve in the next five years.
John Deegan, president of CSS, was delighted but said: ‘What is worrying is the public does not see this improvement continuing. The Government must heed this warning and treat highway maintenance as a priority for funding.’
