Survey calls for more council road gritting

A new survey has revealed almost two-thirds of motorists would like to see smaller roads gritted more frequently, and 40% don’t think their local council is doing enough to ensure all roads are safe to drive on during icy conditions.

Of the 1,000 drivers surveyed, 89% claimed their local roads were more dangerous to drive on than motorways, and 54% would feel safer undertaking a long-distance journey on a main road during adverse weather conditions, than driving a short distance on local roads.

According to the survey, which was commissioned by insurance company esure, and carried out by an independent research company, Scotland had the most dangerous small roads in the UK, with 95% of Scottish motorists claiming they felt more safe driving on motorways than local roads.

Local councils in Wales were the most efficient, with 46% of Welsh drivers confident that their council did enough to ensure local roads were safe during adverse weather.
