Surrey’s revolutionary plans to promote integration

Surrey has given the go ahead for a scheme designed to revolutionise the way in which residents travel around the county.

The county council’s executive has backed the Transport for Surrey (TfS) plan which aims to provide a more integrated transport system and tackle local problems of congestion and accessibility – similar to Transport for London’s work in the capital.

The initiative will bring together the county council and all 11 of Surrey’s borough and district councils, together with local transport providers and agencies to create a co-ordinated series of travel schemes and improve links between rural and more urban areas.

Partner organisations will be invited to a conference on 22 February which will decide priorities for the setting up of a transport board to develop the initiative and exam plans to develop Guildford, Redhill/Reigate and Woking as key transport hubs.

Transport for Surrey has already won an award from the Local Government Association’s innovation forum, and the county’s executive member for transport, David Munro, said: ‘The response from other authorities has been extremely encouraging and they have been stressing that TfS must really deliver.’
