Streetscene: Edgware Road may be at the cutting edge of street design

A ‘shared space’ design, allowing pedestrians and vehicles to intermingle, is being considered by Transport for London for a street off the busy thoroughfare of Edgware Road. TfL’s concept for a streetscene pilot for Edgware Road, drawn up by consultant Hyder, would create a shared space surface on Harrowby Street, a key route for schoolchildren (pictured). Unnecessary clutter would also be removed as part of one of six pilots to create streetscene which better serves pedestrians. Other TfL projects would aim to widen footways and strip clutter at Borough High Street – ahead of the construction of the 66-storey ‘shard of glass’ building, bringing 3,000 new pedestrians a day – and London Borough of Bromley’s West Wickham High Street, ‘typical of outer London high streets’.
