Streetlighting given credit

Transport minister, Rosie Winterton, has announced millions of PFI credits for streetlighting.

A joint award for Croydon and Lewisham of £79.5M will allow up to 44,000 units to be upgraded across the authorities over the next 25 years. Croydon said any new light fixtures would be designed to provide a brighter, whiter light, but still minimise light pollution.

Coventry City Council was awarded £64.3M in PFI credits, meaning 26,000 existing lighting columns will be replaced, and around 6,300 new columns will be added across the city during the first five years of a 25-year contract. The council will now select a private sector contractor to undertake the replacement works.
