Street cleaners pick a winner with recycling ‘on the go’

Street cleaners in Milton Keynes are ‘recycling as they go’, in an initiative thought to be the first of its kind in the UK.
On daily routes, up to 30 litter pickers are using twin-compartment barrows to separate recyclable litter as they pick it up around the city. A specially-designed tool is currently being developed to enable the scheme to be rolled out to all 80 street cleaners across the city.
Chris Carvell, council waste operations manager, said: ‘We have had to adapt a plastic bag-carrying ring to allow our cleaners to carry both a pink and black sack at the same time, while still allowing them to use their other hand to carry a metal litter-picking claw. We believe we are the first council to have the idea of having recyclable litter bins one step further by allowing street cleaners to recycle at source as well.’
Early results from the trial revealed that 11t had been recycled.
