Stray lights fail to find a home in hearts of local residents

A Northeast council has responded to residents’ complaints by removing 41 newly-installed street lighting columns from a previously unlit road.

Redcar & Cleveland Council removed the columns recently put up along The Stray, a 1.5km-stretch of coast road between Redcar and Marske. The road has had 18 reported injury accidents since 1996, of which 10 were at night.

But council leader, George Dunning, said he accepted residents’ concerns about the scheme’s environmental impact. One councillor reportedly said the lights ‘looked like Colditz’.

Cllr Dunning said: ‘We must stress that we carried out the work with the very best intentions of improving road safety and the fear of crime, putting light into an area that has increased pedestrian usage at night.’

The work is part of a three-year, £46M private-finance initiative programme to upgrade streetlighting across the borough. Dunning said the 41 columns would be used elsewhere in the project.
