Strategy offers Extra value

Hertfordshire councillors have welcomed the county council’s Highways Extra programme as providing a cost-effective way of maintaining roads already in a reasonable condition.
The £10M resurfacing programme for 2006/07, delivered through a one-year contract with Lafarge Aggregates, ‘provided excellent value for money,’ according to the county’s environment scrutiny committee. Almost 400 schemes ‘were successfully completed’.
The initiative was launched after a deterioration modelling exercise showed that merely spending government allocations would fail to tackle the backlog of repairs on all roads.
