Stockport MBC has been successful in its bid for £8.1m of government funding to repair its road structures.
The money will be used to repair 57 highway retaining walls over the course of the next three years, and will provide a number of employment and apprenticeship opportunities through Stockport.
The council’s transport asset management plans identified the need for the scheme, which will ensure the walls are strengthened to meet requirements for supporting traffic. Cllr David White, cabinet member for transport, said: ‘Retaining walls are of major importance to the borough so it is vital that they are maintained.’
The funding will also be used to safeguard infrastructure against the effects of climate change, including increased heavy rainfall.
The bid also secured Department for Transport funding for neighbouring Oldham Council, Rochdale MBC and Tameside MBC.
