Steep rise in HGV accidents involving overseas vehicles

The number of accidents involving overseas heavy good vehicles has increased ‘significantly’ over the past seven years, coinciding with a 33% rise in EU lorries on UK roads.

Research from car insurer LV= reveals the number of HGVs from the EU has risen by 33% since 2001, and is expected to continue to grow by 18% over the next five years.

According to internal insurance claims data, the vast majority of accidents involving lorries happen on motorways, and many are a result of the HGV being left-hand drive, causing a blind spot on the right side of their vehicle.

John O’Roarke, managing director of LV= general insurance, said: ‘We are calling on the Government to bring in legislation to make it compulsory for left-hand drive heavy goods vehicles to be fitted with blind spot mirrors to help avoid these kinds of accidents.’
