Stafford’s secret weapon to capture fly-tippers

Plans are in the pipeline for secret cameras to be installed at fly-tipping hotspots in and around Stafford.

The covert equipment is the latest part of a high-profile campaign to stop littering in the Stafford Borough Council area.

Almost 300 incidents of fly-tipping have been reported to the council this year – slightly less than the same period in 2006. A number of warning letters have already been issued to suspects.

And now, council bosses hope the introduction of hidden cameras will help reduce incidents as well as gather evidence to prosecute offenders. Fly-tippers face jail or a maximum £50,000, if caught.

Phil Gammon, head of the council’s streetscene service, said: ‘We are hoping to have the cameras soon. They will provide a deterrent to would-be fly-tippers – and can give valuable evidence to prosecute those who dump rubbish illegally.’
