Stack of new ideas for Kent lorry park proposal

Kent County Council has revealed its preferred location for the Operation Stack lorry park near the M20.

The aim is to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving, avoiding the inconvenience caused by Operation Stack. It will have the capacity to hold up to 3,000 lorries.

The site is south of the M20 and north of the high-speed railway, off Church Lane, Aldington. Kent will seek planning permission and negotiate the necessary land assembly, and will look for the Department for Transport to fund the scheme.

The council suggested the scheme could be funded by a ‘Brit disc’ charge on all foreign lorries entering the UK. Meanwhile, the leader of Kent has written to French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, seeking compensation for UK businesses affected by the recent French ferry strike. Paul Carter complained that the industrial action forced Operation Stack into place, resulting in long sections of the M20 being closed to traffic which was not travelling to Dover.

‘The disruption caused by industrial action is bringing chaos, not only to our roads and the lives of our residents, but is also seriously damaging Kent’s economy, and we believe, the livelihoods of French and British haulage businesses,’ he wrote.

‘I would appreciate your firm commitment to a resolution to the compensation issues and a long-term solution to the industrial action, which is damaging both our economies.’

The strike by SeaFrance workers, which began on 27 February in a dispute over pay, ended last Friday.
