Spring clean in Derby

Derby schools, residents and businesses will be helping the city council and other organisations spruce up the city during ‘Derby’s big spring clean’ next week (19 to 23 March) and encourage people to take responsibility for keeping their city clean.
The council will clean up hot spots suggested by residents, focusing on three or four different wards each day, with accompanying litter and dog fouling exhibitions. Dog wardens will give out free poop scoop bags.
During the event, gates or bollards will be installed on three areas of land where rubbish is often illegally dumped to prevent fly-tippers driving onto them, as part of the business resource efficiency and waste campaign the council is running with the Environment Agency.
Community organisations and businesses are holding clean-ups at sites including Alvaston Park, the Eagle Centre and Allenton shops while offenders on unpaid work orders - supervised by the Probation Service - will spend three days removing graffiti from a fence between Derby Moor Community Sports College, Littleover and nearby homes, as part of the Community Payback scheme.
Councillor Pauline Latham, council cabinet member for enforcement, said: ‘This is an opportunity for us to put in some extra effort and highlight what we do already while encouraging everyone to take responsibility for their actions and their local surroundings. For example, people could help every day by picking up litter, rather than just walking past it.’
Derby is to recruit two city centre wardens to encourage people not to drop litter and to clean up after their dogs. They could, eventually, be given the power to fine people £50.
