Southwold celebrates completion of £8M protection scheme

Waveney District Council has completed an £8M coastal defence scheme in Southwold. Councillors were joined by the Environment Agency last week to celebrate completion of the 18-month project.

The work involved replacing derelict groynes, pumping 72,000m3 of dredged sand on to the beach, and rebuilding 300m of promenade south of the pier.

Cllr Ken Sale, portfolio holder for the built environment, said: ‘Southwold is a premier tourist attraction in the Waveney area, and this outstanding scheme has increased the standard of protection for the town, its residents, and visitors.

‘This has been a complex operation, which has had to contend with variable weather conditions throughout.’
