Southern to restore full timetable

Southern Rail has said it will restore its full train service from next Tuesday (24 January), after six months of a reduced timetable.

It follows drivers' union ASLEF indicating that it will suspend both its overtime ban and three days of strikes next week for new talks with the company.

The train operator said it is not possible to reintroduce the full timetable until Tuesday because rosters have been drawn up to take account of the overtime ban and a planned strike on Monday by conductors (guards) who are members of the RMT union.

However, Southern said it will be able to run over 70% of its trains on Monday - more than on previous conductor strike days.

Angie Doll, Southern's passenger services director, said: ‘Next Monday, some 200 extra trains will be running and several routes will have their first service on an RMT strike day.

'The RMT should now recognise that their industrial action is wholly futile. They should stop the strikes, get back round the table with us and move forward together with us, delivering a better railway for our passengers.’

The company introduced its ‘revised timetable’ last July, cutting hundreds of services ‘to reduce the passenger impact of daily cancellations’.
