Soaring costs force region to apply for more cash

The East Midlands Regional Assembly has called for millions of pounds of extra government funding because soaring costs of Highways Agency schemes have rendered its Regional Funding Allocation programme unsustainable.

Following the Nichols review, the re-estimated cost of the A46 Newark to Widmerpool scheme has increased from £297M to £360M, while the A453 widening scheme has risen £30M to £128.9M.

EMRA has concluded the A46 scheme will not proceed under current funding. ‘We can’t deliver the programme as it stands under the current cost level,’ a spokesman said.

The transport board also heard that Leicestershire County Council was still to decide how to fund the extra £1.5M needed for the Earl Shilton bypass. Costs increased following the discovery of newts and archaeological issues.
