Smartcard could be a winner at ‘cashless’ Olympic Games

London 2012 Olympics visitors could be taking advantage of a combined spectator ID pass and Oyster travel smartcard.

The independent Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), which advises MPs, will report in July on a feasibility study into a ‘cashless games’.

Parliamentary information technology committee chair, Andrew Miller MP, sees the project as paving the way for future cashless major events. It follows on from the Barclays OnePulse credit card, which has both Oyster card and near field communications (NFC) payment capability.

POST is currently investigating whether it could use the same contactless technology, Visa’s payWave.
