Slow response is quickly dealt with

Work has started on relocating slow worms from the site of the Luton-Dunstable busway, with construction set to begin in 2010.

Preparatory works are expected to start by February, before a contract is awarded. The construction work is currently out to tender, with a closing date of 23 September.

Cllr Tom Nicols, Central Bedfordshire Council’s portfolio holder for sustainable development, said: ‘To provide prospective contractors with the opportunity to maximise their work in 2010, Luton and Bedfordshire councils are funding site clearance in advance of the contract award date.

‘To allow this work to take place, the site has to be cleared of slow worms as part of our commitment to preserve the local environment. The relocation of slow worms has now begun, and will continue until the end of October.’
