Slough takes Heart with £450M project to revitalise centre

The masterplan for Slough’s £450M regeneration project has gained approval from the borough council’s planning committee.

The Heart of Slough project will revitalise a 29-acre site in the centre of the town, bringing new homes, offices, hotels, retail and community facilities.

One of the most iconic changes will see the replacement of the existing Brunel bus station, with a sleek modern design by Matthew Bedward, of Bblur architects. It is due for completion in early 2011.

The planning committee has also approved detailed plans for a new road layout to replace the existing Brunel roundabout. Incorporating interlinked traffic lights which communicate with each other, the new layout promises to improve traffic flow at this busy junction.

The removal of the roundabout will also free-up wasted space, providing room for more open public spaces, such as a plaza area around the church.

‘We want to make Slough much more accessible to pedestrians and people who want to use public transport,’ said Andrew Blake-Herbert, strategic director of resources at Slough Borough Council. ‘So, we’re providing open spaces for pedestrians and carefully placing pedestrian crossings to provide a natural and safe route between the bus and the railway stations and the town centre.’
