Skills & training: Minister visits academy dedicated to customer service

Transport minister, Rosie Winterton, was in Sheffield this week to visit the South Yorkshire Transport Academy.

The academy offers public transport employees the opportunity to learn and develop new and existing skills. It was opened in 2006 to raise the standard of public transport in South Yorkshire. Run by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, it is the first of its kind in the UK.

Winterton said: ‘I congratulate the academy for its pioneering work in helping local public transport workers improve and maintain their customer service expertise. I hope more places around the country consider setting up similar facilities for their staff.’

So far, several bus operators from South Yorkshire have signed up to the training, including First, Powells, Wilfreda Beehive, Mass, Doncaster and Rotherham Community Transport.

The three main types of courses on offer include National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), tailored training courses, and professional development.
