Site’s impact drains away

Sustainable urban drainage is reducing the environmental impact of a 6,000m2 park and ride site in the Wirral. Said to be the first SUDS on this scale within Merseyside, the system was jointly designed by the council and paving manufacturer Charcon, to reduce flooding risk. The car park is elevated to increase its capacity for controlled drainage using Aggregate Industries’ open granular sub-base. Its Charcon Infilta block paving has a nib structure – providing a 5mm space between blocks to allow water ingress – and is designed to replicate the natural infiltration of surface water. The site is part of a £1.26M package of transport improvements ahead of the Open Golf Championship in nearby Hoylake.
