Single-minded Reading presses ahead with one-way system

Reading Borough Council has opted to press ahead with plans to turn the town’s ring road into a single, one-way system.
The council voted this week to approve the scheme rather than hold a public inquiry, which had been called for by Wokingham Borough Council. A Reading spokesperson said the council was currently drawing up a timeline and planned to push on as soon as possible.
The scheme will see traffic flow in an anti-clockwise direction on the Inner Distribution Road (IDR), in an effort to reduce congestion, increase safety on the road, and improve access to the town centre. However, Wokingham Borough Council has expressed concerns that the scheme would have a knock-on effect on its roads. A spokesperson for Wokingham said: ‘We’re interested to hear the discussions and we now seek legal advice.’
