The Government claimed that London ‘is responding to the challenge’ of cutting landfilling, as it knocked back a new bid to establish a single waste disposal authority this week.
Jim Fitzpatrick, minister for London, told MPs: ‘London is doing well at diverting from landfill. A fundamental change in the governance structures would lead to a dip in performance.’
But Karen Buck, the Labour MP who moved the amendment to establish the authority, vowed that this would not be ‘the last ministers hear of the matter’.
