Simplify integration rules, states tell EC

A number of EU states have called on the European Commission to simplify its rules and improve the integration of transport policy.

Transport minister, Sadiq Khan, revealed the EU transport council highlighted the need to support recovery from the economic crisis while tackling climate change, at its first meeting under the Swedish presidency.

In a policy debate prior to the next White Paper in 2010, ministers also underlined the role technology had to play in meeting critical existing policies.

Mr Khan added that progress was made on the road transport negotiating mandate between the EU and western Balkan nations, which was deemed acceptable by the UK. The EU presidency has expressed its ambition that these negotiations would be completed by the end of the year.
