Signs ordering bikers to dismount are a tall order, says charity

Sustrans Wales is urging Conwy CBC to remove ‘Cyclists dismount’ signs at a new underpass with 2.3 metres of headroom.

The underpass is part of a £700,000 investment in a shared-use bridge across the Chester-Holyhead railway at Llandudno junction. The bridge is designed for unimpeded cycling, but cyclists are told to dismount where the Conwy Estuary Strategic Route continues beneath the adjacent road.

A Conwy council spokesman said: ‘The headroom in the underpass structure is below the minimum standard allowed for cycling.’

Sustrans calculates cyclists would need to be almost 8ft tall to be at risk, and says official guidelines stress that warnings of limited headroom are preferable to dismounting instructions in such locations.

Sustrans Wales director, Lee Waters, said the profusion of chicanes and orders to dismount on Welsh cyclepaths made cyclists feel unwelcome. He urged authorities to shift their focus from potential litigation to fostering healthier lifestyles through infrastructure which encouraged cycling.
