Shortfall threatens travel for over-60s

Budgetary pressures on Northern Ireland’s Department of Regional Development mean it needs more money to keep free travel for the over-60s in operation.

The scheme was recently extended to all over-60s, but a budget shortfall of a reported £400M has been identified over the next two years, including £5M for the concessionary travel scheme.

The department said there were no plans for service reductions in the current year, but a budget stock take was under way for 2009-11, including the cost of maintaining Translink’s current budget at a time of increased costs.

It said no decisions had been taken on increased budget bids, and contingency plans were being developed, but cuts would be a last resort.
