Shire councils seek partner for joint permit scheme

A contract for a joint permit scheme across the West Midlands shire councils should be in place by the end of the year, Surveyor has learned.

Keith Davenport, Warwickshire County Council’s traffic manager, said the group was looking for a provider after the first tendering scheme had failed, but was confident of submitting a proposal to the Government within 12 months.

‘If successful, the scheme could be a model for others,’ he said. A joint working scheme would mean ‘a consistent and efficient approach, with the application managed from one base, yet to be decided’.

Utilities would benefit from transparency and a ‘common set of rules which can’t be interpreted’, although he acknowledged they would ‘raise comments, like everywhere else’.

‘We’ll ask our consultant to monitor schemes in London and Kent,’ he added. Covering the seven regional councils, the scheme had ‘buy-in from the top’, and was seen as a good example of joined-up working, he said.
