Shifting sands mean another battle to save Hastings

Thousands of tonnes of shingle and rock are being shipped in for urgent coastal defence works in Hastings.

Mackley Construction has been appointed to strengthen the seawall at Carlisle Parade, refurbish groynes, and recycle 30,000t of shingle along the seafront.

The project is being carried out by Canterbury City Council and funded by DEFRA.

Councillor Peter Finch, lead member responsible for amenities and resort services, said: ‘Our contractors have arranged to bring in the larger rocks by sea, which will avoid clogging the road with lorries.’ The work is scheduled to finish in June, subject to weather conditions.
