Sheffield’s rising success

Sheffield City Council has claimed it coped well after the city was hit by flash flooding last week, almost two years on from the summer floods which affected the region in 2007.

Traffic in Sheffield was gridlocked as the city’s drainage system could not cope after a month’s rainfall fell within 12 hours. A number of schools were closed and the central library, town hall and city hall were flooded.

Disruption was reported in Rotherham as schools and colleges in the Aston and Aughton area were forced to close as well.

However, a spokeswoman for Sheffield council said: ‘The disruption was nothing like two years ago. A deluge of rain caused the drains to fill, and our street teams were out on the roads pumping them out – we coped well.’
