‘Shabby’ London street lined up to benefit from Crossrail

The creation of a new public square has been announced as part of plans to transform Oxford Street, following the construction of Crossrail.

Westminster City Council’s planning sub-committee has now approved six planning briefs for the Crossrail construction sites at Bond Street, Paddington and Tottenham Court Road. The proposals would mark the completion of a series of West End improvements. They were announced exactly 100 days from the start of work on a £5M diagonal ‘Shibuya’ crossing at Oxford Circus.

Cllr Alastair Moss, chairman of the planning sub-committee, said: ‘The West End is undergoing a transformation which will ensure its success for generations to come and it is vital as part of this that the admittedly-rather shabby eastern end of Oxford Street is also radically improved.’

The new piazza outside Centrepoint will be constructed as part of the £1bn investment at Tottenham Court Road by Transport for London and Crossrail which will deliver a new Crossrail station.
