Seventy-two mega-watt incinerator gets go-ahead

A 72MW incinerator proposed for Belvedere, southeast London, has got the Government go-ahead after three planning applications and two inquiries.
Energy minister Malcom Wicks said that 'this energy-from-waste station will be fuelled by waste which would otherwise go to landfill. London currently exports much of its serious waste problem to the Home Counties'. He agreed with the inspector that there would be 'ample residual waste' even if London meets ambitious recycling targets.
The facility, proposed by Riverside Resource Recovery Ltd, was first proposed back in 1990.
