Services maintained as capital’s workers strike

All refuse collection, street cleaning, and litter collection services were kept running as normal in Edinburgh, despite a one day strike by more than 5,000 people – one-quarter of the city council staff.

The industrial action was called by trade union Unison to protest against a £9M package of closures to reduce falling school rolls. It led to the closure of many facilities and, in some cases, non-provision or a reduction in some non-essential services, but no major service difficulties were reported.

City council leader, Jenny Dawe, said: ‘There has been some disruption but we have tried hard to ensure lifeline services have been preserved. ‘We are in discussion with Unison, and while we did not manage to avert strike action, we are making progress. There were several useful and productive aspects and we will continue talking to avoid further industrial action.’
