Seeing red over more lights

 
The number of traffic lights in London has grown by 18% over the last five years – faster than inflation or national traffic growth. Department for Transport  figures showing an increase from 4,236 signals in 2000 to 4,978 last year were described as ‘astonishing’ by motoring groups. The RAC Foundation blamed grants to boroughs to smooth the way for congestion charging in 2003. But Transport for London said most new signals addressed congestion, safety at pedestrian crossings, or bus priority.
