Sectors negotiate deal with unions to protect temp staff

The Government, trade unions and business have hammered-out a deal on providing agency workers with equal rights to holidays, sick pay, and pensions.

The TUC said the agreement to provide equal treatment for agency workers after they had worked for an employer for 12 weeks ‘represents a breakthrough’.

The London Technical Advisors’ Group warned that giving temps the same employment conditions as directly-recruited staff ‘would mean we get less work done for our money’ (Surveyor, 28 February).

But the Government said the agreement would allow the UK to fulfil its obligation to implement the agency workers Directive to provide equal treatment, without removing employers’ flexibility.

But one-third of agency workers in local government were placed for more than a year, as councils struggle to recruit permanent staff – one-quarter experiencing difficulty in recruiting a traffic/transportation engineer.
