Scrap road targets, says LGA

Council leaders have called for the scrapping of central government targets requiring local highway authorities ‘to focus on maintaining roads that are not heavily used’.
The Local Government Association blamed a ‘triple whammy’ of Whitehall targets on road condition, rising maintenance costs, and a revenue funding freeze for a failure to tackle the national repair backlog. The LGA’s call for council ‘freedom to target money on transport issues that matter most to communities’ comes as the Government considers ‘a radical reduction’ of best value performance indicators.
