Scottish road deaths rise

The Society for Chief Officers for Transportation in Scotland hopes the road deaths figure for 2006 ‘is a blip in a continuing downward trend’.
Douglas Muir, chair of the SCOTS road safety committee, based at Midlothian council, said the 10% increase in fatalities compared with 2005 ‘should act as a reminder that we cannot be complacent and that more work is required’.
SCOTS welcomed the Scottish Executive’s intention to investigate the reason for the high 2006 figure. ‘This will assist authorities in identifying areas or road-user groups on which to focus their efforts,’ said Muir.
