Scottish Executive backs £1bn Forth crossing

The Scottish Executive has given approval for a new, multi-modal crossing over the Firth of Forth. The £1bn crossing will take the form of a bridge or tunnel, and three locations for the corridor have been identified, transport minister, Tavish Scott, confirmed on Wednesday(14 February).
He said the crossing would be the biggest construction project since devolution. ‘Cabinet agreed today to take forward the replacement crossing. Work will continue to assist a final decision which will be made this summer on where the crossing will be, what it will be, and how much it will cost.’ The Forth Estuary Transport Authority believes weight restrictions may have to be introduced on the existing Forth Road Bridge as early as 2013 – if corrosion cannot be halted (Surveyor, 7 December 2006).
Two final Scottish Transport reports will be completed by May, and will assess the three corridors in detail, drawing together all reports findings and recommend a preferred crossing option. The Freight Transport Association welcomed the announcement, but warned against opting for a tunnel crossing. ‘Most tunnels of any length impose severe restrictions on the carriage of hazardous cargoes. Some are banned, some must be escorted or have separation and speed limits applied,’ said Gavin Scott, head of policy Scotland. ‘A tunnel of this length would also need extra service tunnels that would significantly increase the cost
