Scottish Executive approves £6M Hebrides protection programme

The Scottish Executive has allowed Western Isles Council to proceed with a £6M coastal defence scheme for the Outer Hebrides.
The plan will be one of the largest-ever single investments in coastal protection in the Outer Hebrides. All the scheme’s projects are located on the west coast of the islands, benefiting communities exposed to the Atlantic Ocean.
Welcoming the news, Angus Campbell, vice-convener of the council, said: ‘This allows us to proceed to the next stage in the process. We will work with project stakeholders to secure the outstanding 20% funding required to match the 80% we are confident of securing from the executive.’
However, he expressed regret that one project, the £340,000 Gualan Island beach management project, was not successful in its bid.
